History & Course Overview
The Metropolitan Golf Club has provided its members and guests with a world-class golfing experience on its current site since 1908. Its championship course is widely regarded as having some of the finest playing surfaces in world golf, a reputation built on meticulous conditioning and timeless Sandbelt design principles.
Pure couch fairways combine with firm, fast greens that are cut precisely to the edges of the bunkers, demanding accuracy, strategy, and intelligent shot selection. The course offers a classic Sandbelt test that rewards thoughtful play while challenging the very best professionals.
Metropolitan boasts a rich tournament history. The club has hosted seven Men’s Australian Opens, a Women’s Australian Open, the Australian Masters in 2014, and the 2018 PGA TOUR ISPS Handa World Cup of Golf. A round at Metropolitan allows players to walk in the footsteps of the game’s greatest champions.

Signature Holes
1st Hole — Par 4
380m (Men) / 339m (Women)
One of the finest opening holes on the Sandbelt, this classic par 4 doglegs left around two fairway bunkers. A large bunker guards the right side of the green, making an accurate drive to the left edge of the fairway especially rewarding. When the pin is tucked close to the right bunker, positioning from the tee is critical to create a clear line to the flag.
16th Hole — Par 4
319m (Men) / 264m (Women)
A brilliant short par 4 that doglegs sharply right around deep fairway bunkers that have played decisive roles in Australian Open history. While some players may attempt to drive the green, holding the small, sloping surface is extremely difficult. Pin placement often dictates the best strategy, with approaches from 70 metres frequently more manageable than from close range. A textbook example of strategic Sandbelt design.
18th Hole — Par 4
400m (Men) / 325m (Women)
A classic long par 4 finishing hole and one of the most photographed on the Sandbelt. Playing straight but demanding, fairway bunkers on the right catch blocked drives, while the ideal angle into left-hand pin positions is from near those same bunkers. Into a northerly wind, this hole becomes brutally difficult — a true championship test that has decided multiple Australian Opens.
